Q&A
How would you describe your teaching style?
I view yoga as a holistic practice that supports healing by reconnecting the mind, body, and spirit. My intention is to create a welcoming space where students of all backgrounds can slow down, reconnect with themselves, and leave feeling more grounded, centered, and at ease.
My classes weave together meditation, breathwork (pranayama), yogic philosophy, and mindful movement (asana) to create a balanced practice that nurtures both inner awareness and physical well-being. I encourage students to be present with themselves while cultivating a deeper connection to the natural world and the rhythms of life.
My teaching is inspired by the wisdom of Ayurveda and Kundalini Yoga, while remaining accessible and supportive for students wherever they are on their yoga journey.
Was there a moment when you knew that teaching yoga was for you?
I think the moment I knew teaching was for me was when I taught my very first class on a schedule with my first teaching job.
It was a Free Public class at Salesforce Park on a sunny day and there were 50+ people taking the class. Before I was thinking what did I get myself into, I taught the sequence I planned and hoped people liked the class. I noticed my nervous voice and small mix ups of my left and rights at first. After the class, people literally clapped and thanked me for how it made them feel and told me it was a great class. I realized my own mind was working against me because only I was focused on the errors and I could only grow from there.
The theme was the Beginner’s Mindset and it is a theme I return to often because of that lesson I learned.
Teaching yoga has opened my mind and perspective into my own life and I get to share that with my community.
What is your favorite class to teach at HAUM, and why?
I have been loving teaching my 9am Vinyasa classes Mondays and Wednesdays because it is a beautiful time of day in the Mission Studio. The way the morning light lights up the studio with the quiet and calm of the 5th floor as the hustle of the city comes alive outside. It always reminds me that it’s ok to take a pause, even if the world around me is still hustling and moving around me.
Is there a moment from teaching at HAUM Studios that has stayed with you?
My first time teaching yoga at HAUM on my own was unexpected because I was the host that day and one of the teachers could not make it last minute. I decided that I could step in if people were still interested in taking the class. The whole room decided to stay to take my class, and after everyone was really grateful for the class and ultimately wanted to know when I would be teaching again. It was a such an exhilarating fun experience I won’t forget.
What can students expect when they walk into one of your classes?
When you step into one of my classes, you can expect more than a physical yoga practice—you can expect an opportunity to slow down, reconnect, and come home to yourself.
I strive to create a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment where every student, regardless of experience, feels supported and encouraged to move in a way that honors their own body.
Whether you’re looking to build strength, reduce stress, deepen your spiritual practice, or simply find a moment of peace in a busy world, you’ll leave with more than a workout. My hope is that you leave feeling grounded, centered, and a little more connected to yourself than when you arrived.
BIO
Cyrus is a Bay Area native from San Jose who found yoga in 2020 during a season of uncertainty. After completing his Peace Corps service in Thailand at the start of the pandemic, he turned to the practice for stress relief and movement. What he discovered, though, was something much deeper. Yoga became a way to reconnect with himself, navigate life’s challenges, and cultivate greater presence, compassion, and curiosity—both on and off the mat.
After moving to San Francisco for a career in the federal government, Cyrus found his yoga home at HAUM. The community and teachers there became mentors, friends, and a constant source of inspiration, encouraging him to explore the philosophy and heart of yoga beyond the physical practice. He later completed HAUM’s Yoga Teacher Training under the guidance of Yvonne and Danni.
Today, Cyrus is pursuing graduate studies to become a therapist. His vision is to bring together trauma-informed yoga therapy, somatic therapy, and talk therapy into a holistic approach that supports healing, resilience, and authentic growth. Whether in a yoga class or one day in the therapy room, his hope is to create spaces where people feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to meet themselves with greater awareness and compassion.
